The
District Institute of Education and Training (DIET),
Morigaon was established in 1995 in compliance to
achieve the goal in the National Policy of Education,
1986 to play a meaningful role in the State education
system. The responsibility 0f DIET, Morigaon has, of
late grown manifold especially in the context of the
NCF-2005, RTE Act-2009 and NCF-TE and not limited to
teacher training but as an Institution to manage quality
aspects in Schools, professional development of teachers
especially to develop perspective teachers for society,
intra-district academic coordination in the district,
academic assessment monitoring, Research and Action
Research, ICT INTERVENTION in teaching-learning system,
innovative practices and academic planning in the
district.

A brief note on Morigaon district and its basic
Educational profile:
The present day administrative district of Morigaon
situates itself between 26.15’ and 26.5’ N latitude and
between 92’-95.5’ E longitude . The Second smallest
district of Assam , Morigaon is 78km. from the state’s
capital Dispur and is bounded by Brahmapurtra on the
North, Karbi Anglong on the South, Nagaon on the East
and Kamrup on the west killing, kolong and kapili rivers
flow through the southern part of the district .The
general appearance of the district is extremely
picturesque. There are three Reserve Forests . These are
Sunaikuchi, Khulahat, and Bura Mayong. There is also one
wildlife Sanctuary, named Pabitara, which is famous for
the Indian one horned Rhinoceros. The normal rainfall of
the district is 1772.4 mm/year. The district covers an
area of the 1450.02 Sq. Kms.
The total population of the district is 7,76,265, of
which7,38,268 numbers stay in rural areas and 37,988 in
Urban areas . It has three urban areas (Morigaon,
Jagiroad and Jagiroad paper Mill) covering on area of
17.92 sq.km. As per the Cencus 2001, the population
density of the district is 500, which is much higher
than the state density of population i.e. 340 persons.
Administratively, Morigaon has one sub-division namely
Morigaon. The district of Morigaon has five development
blocks (Mayong, Kapili, Bhurbandha, Laharighat and
Moirabari) and four Education blocks (Mayong, Kapili,
Bhurbandha and Laharighat).
Background of DIET:
The District Institute of Education and Training (DIETs)
were envisioned in the National Policy of Education,
1986, and were created by the Government India, Ministry
of Human Resource Development in the early 1990s to
strengthen elementary education and support the
decentralization of education to the district level. A
total of 571 DIETs were created through a centrally
supported scheme in phased manner all over the country.
In Assam , 6 DIETs were established in the district of
Kamrup,Sonitpur, Cachar, Jorhat, Nagaon and Kokrajhar in
1989 as the first phase. In 1994, another 5 DIETs were
established in Barpeta, Goalpara,Darrang,Lakhimpur and
Dibrugarh as second phase. 7 DIETs in the districts of
Dhubri, Nalbari, NC Hills, Karimganj, Sibasagar,
Golaghat and Morigaon were established as third phase in
1995.
